Dukha Health Project

Need

To assess the Dukha reindeer herders' health needs, Nomadicare created a health database.

Program

For seven years, vitals signs, chief complaints, and hemoglobin for 250 nomadic reindeer herders were documented. The predominant issues were high blood pressure and dental problems. Other health problems included alcohol abuse and cigarette smoking among men.

Follow-Up

Nomadicare provided a doctor and dentist from the United States. The dentist pulled 200 teeth and subsequently ran out of Novocain.

A movie, posters, teaching and dissemination of information on the harmful nature of sweets targets the children's school and community. Tourist agencies are taught the danger of providing candy to the children.
