Ganzorig, Dukha
Reindeer Herder,
during shamanic
ceremony |
For the fourth year, the NOMADICARE
team will be filming the lives of Dukha
Reindeer Herders. Last year we
specifically asked if it would be okay
for us to film the Dukha life. Ganbat,
an Elder in the East Taiga, said, “Yes, it
is beautiful. I will be happy because I
want people to know that we are
living here in this lifestyle. It will be like
yesterday when we watched (Gobi
Women's Song). It was amazing for us
to see the life in the Gobi. Maybe the
people in the Gobi will be interested
in our lives!”

The remaining 207 nomadic Dukha
Reindeer Herders in Mongolia live in
remote high altitude settlements. Just
as we did last year, we will travel 30
hours by horse riding from one
settlement to the other, sleep on the
ground in an ortiz (tipi) and help milk
the reindeer. By gathering health care
data, we hope to support the
sustainability of this group. By
documenting on film we are creating
a record for future generations—theirs
and ours. Stay tuned for In the
Shadow of Shamans, our new film.
